We've gotten in a few dogs over the past year, including one today, that are chipped but haven't been registered. Or they were registered originally, but the family moved and didn't re-register. Problem, of course, is that the owner can't be located if the chip company doesn't have the latest information! In essence, the chip becomes useless.
My suspicion is that the owner of this dog is probably on vacation. The dog is about a year old, intact, beautiful male. The shelter had him for 5 days, but obviously no one claimed him. We'll keep him for another week before neutering and placing him, to see if the owner shows up. And I'll forward his chip number to SCA breeders in the area.
And, BTW, this came very close to ending tragically. This dog was in a very small high-kill shelter and was literally scheduled to be put down on Monday night--the first day he was even available for adoption! A Sibe group we work with has a member that covers that shelter and let us know about the dog. He pulled him for us and transported him to me this morning.
