I've read that at least a couple of rescue groups are currently in the process of setting up their 501c3. Others have already been through the process. I think it could be very helpful if we could share some of this info to help make it easier for other groups in the future. I hope others will add to this discussion, or ask questions if they need help with their 501c3 efforts.

To start off, I want to recommend the Nolo Press books about setting up a 501c3. They have a book called "How to Form a Nonprofit Corporation (National Edition)" (they also have an edition specifically for California). You can get the book from www.nolopress.com (http://www.nolo.com/product.cfm/ObjectID/5C6811EB-C2B2-414C-B126D98C0F5364B4/111/ ) or from most larger bookstores.

And check with whatever state board handles the incorporation of businesses in your state. The first step in establishing a 501c3 is to set up a state nonprofit corporation, so you need to know what your state requires. Once that is set up, then you apply for the federal 501c3 status with the IRS.
